Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
