Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
